The Murray State Racers, less than two weeks away from their first game of the season at Mississippi State on Sept. 3, continued to work on the basics today in the 95-degree heat.
"We're under two weeks away from our first game, and it feels like we still have a million things to work on," Racer head coach Joe Pannunzio said.
The Racers worked on goal-line offense and defense today, as well as kickoff returns and kickoff coverage. Another point of focus that Pannunzio wanted to work on was double-teaming on the offensive line.
"We worked on a zone block for our offensive line," Pannunzio said. "When you put two guys on one lineman, you have to be dominant, and I don't think we are at the level we need to be at just yet."
CAMP NOTES: The Racers also worked on an offensive drill where certain situations would be set up that would force quarterback Ken Topps to scramble. Said Pannunzio, "Ken is so nifty out of the pocket, so we needed a bonafide scramble drill that would emulate a real game situation."
INJURY REPORT: Four Racers did not practice today, and all injuries are day-to-day: offensive lineman Matt Garrett (ankle), running back Nick Turner (knee), linebacker Vincent Coley (hand) and tight end Ben Rush (ankle).
LEADERSHIP CONCERNS: Pannunzio shared concerns about the lack of leadership he has seen so far in the practice season. "I'm worried about our team leadership," he said. "We have about three-quarters of guys who do the right thing on every play and every drill, but about one-quarter of the guys still need to put the team ahead of the individual."
