The Racers and Cardinals rowed two races that are called "stake" races. The four-person teams rowed 1,700 meters (1.06 miles), then made a turn and came back 1,500 meters (0.9 miles) for a total of 3,200 meters (1.99 miles).
In the first race, the Louisville A-boat crossed the line first with a time of 13 minutes, 4 seconds. The Louisville B-boat finished second at 13:31, the Racers' A-boat was third at 14:03, and MSU's B-boat finished fourth 14:42.
Louisville A also won the second race with a time of 13:07. Louisville B was second with a time of 14:00, and Murray State A was third at 14:09.
Murray State head coach Bill McLean was pleased with hthe effort of his team.
"We had perfect rowing conditions as far as having smooth water, but it was very hot today and we really had to keep the kids hydrated," he said.
"This was the first time we raced Louisville in fours. We learned a lot about what we have to do to reach the level that they are at. We are as good as Louisville in technique, but they are more fit than we are."
The next event for the Racers is the Head of the Licking in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Saturday, Sept. 24. The race is a three-mile event, longer than the distance rowed against Louisville.
