Shirley shoots 8-under 205, named to all-tournament team

Kyle Shirley shot an 8-under-par 205 to finish in fourth place and bolster the Murray State men's golf team into a tie for third place at the Buffalo Rock/Southern Showdown, played on the par-71, 6,900-yard Bent Brook Golf Course in McCalla, Ala.
The Racers shot a 10-under 274 in the third and final round today, the third-best single-round team score of the tournament, to vault into a tie for third place with Tennessee Tech. MSU outshot the Golden Eagles by 12 shots in the final round to earn the tie.
Troy raced past second-round leader Belmont by outshooting the Bisons by 15 shots with a final-round 272, the best single round of the tournament, to take team titlist honors with a three-round score of 829. Belmont finished second at 832, followed by Murray State and Tennessee Tech at 841, Berry at 842, Samford at 848, host Birmingham-Southern at 854, Tennessee-Martin at 865, Tennessee State at 871, Jackson State at 877 and Centenary at 889.
Shirley finished with a 67-70-68 = 205 to place fourth in the 83-golfer tournament, earning a spot on the all-tournament team, joining medalist Jeffrey Lanier of Belmont (199), Max Alverio of Alabama (204), Scott Stallings of Tennessee Tech (204) and Jarod Trammell of Berry (206).
Jamie Frazier finished out strongly, shooting a 4-under-par 67 in the final round to finish with a 70-73-67 = 210, tying for 13th at 3-under. Will Cox shot a 72-70-69 = 211 to finish at 2-under and tie for 17th, while Michael Craft fired a 75-72-70 = 217 to finish tied for 40th at 4-over-par. Nick Griffin shot a 73-75-70 = 218 to finish tied for 44th at 5-over. Mitchell Moore golfed as an individual and finished with a 70-69-72 = 211 to tie for 17th at 2-under.
Murray State will next compete at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate at Sunset beach, N.C., on Sept. 24-25.
