Sarah McFadden staked USM to a 1-0 lead when her shot, 10 yards out, from the left side hit the right corner. Micah Stephens assisted on the play. The Racers (0-3-0) out-shot Southern Mississippi, 6-5 in the first period but couldn't score and trailed by one at the break.
With just four shot attempts in the second period, MSU was unable to scratch the scoring column and the Golden Eagles added a pair of goals to secure the victory.
"We're 90 percent happy with the game today," Murray State Head Coach Mike Minielli said. "We just had three breakdowns today that led to the three goals for Southern Miss."
Kim Turner took a pass from Carly Barkley in the 56th minute to extend the visitors' lead to 2-0. Barkley then set the final score when she scored from five yards out off a pass from Andrea Kerkhoff in the 71st minute.
McFadden led all players with four shots. Barkley finished with two shots, one goal and one assist. Rebekah Clay, Kara Carlile and Courtney Buchanan had two shots each for MSU.
"In the long term, I'm confident we'll do well in OVC play. Southern Miss is very much like Eastern Illinois and Samford," Minielli said. "We just have to execute better."
Holly Cox picked up the shutout for the Golden Eagles, making four saves in 90 minutes of action. Annie Fortier played the entire match in goal for the Racers, finishing with two saves.
Next up for Murray State is a Wednesday match against the University of Louisville at Cutchin Field, on the MSU campus, at 3:00 p.m. The match with the Cardinals will mark the 100th game in the history of the Racer soccer program.
