The Coca-Cola Community All-Americans program is all about recognizing, celebrating and applauding student-athletes who are making a difference in their communities.
Steenbergen, a business administrations major from Russellville, Ky., distinguished herself by being involved with numerous community service and campus service projects. Steenbergen has been recognized for her campus service through involvement with the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), and has helped with campus and community service projects as a member of the MSU women's golf team, serving as president of the MSU Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Steenbergen has also participated in national-level community service through her participation with Athletes in Action.
"We are extremely proud of all our student-athletes and the tremendous commitments they've made to this institution and our community through their community service efforts," said Matt Kelly, assistant director of athletics for student-athlete services. "In addition to bringing national attention to the issues of volunteerism and community involvement, the Coca-Cola Community All-Americans program provides a platform for colleges and universities to honor and recognize student-athletes, like April, for their outstanding contributions to the communities in which they live, learn, work and play."
As a Coca-Cola Community All-American, Steenbergen will be Murray State's nominee at the national level. A panel of representatives from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) will select seven student-athletes from NCAA®, NAIATM and Junior/Community College member institutions as national Coca-Cola Community All-Americans.
The final Coca-Cola Community All-Americans and their institutions will be recognized this summer at the annual NACDA Convention. Additionally, the seven national Coca-Cola Community All-Americans will receive an award, and Coca-Cola will make a $5,000 donation to the community/philanthropic cause of their choice.
