Will Werner emerged as a bright spot for the Racers last season. As team got deeper and deeper into the schedule, he came on strong and ended the season as MSU's ninth best tackler with 29 (20 solo). Playing the safety position and special teams, Werner also recovered a fumble and blocked both of
Werner was excelling once again in off season workouts under new coach Matt Griffin and staff. But in the final workout before spring break March 17, Werner broke his ankle.
So this spring, Werner is watching.

Werner injured himself during an agility drill.
No doubt it has been tough on Werner to be forced to sit and watch as the rest of his teammates work hard to get better, but he remains in good spirits, and hopes to get back on the field as soon as possible after his rehabilitation process.
"Like I said many times, better now than later," Werner said.
“Hopefully, get the cast off and start walking in three weeks,” said Werner, who is one of the fastest players on the team. “I'll start my rehab and work on that all summer and hope to be back at full speed for the training camp in August.”
Even while sitting on the sidelines during all of the spring practices so far, Werner gets the chance to focus on details of the new defense brought in by defensive coordinator Rich Nagy.
“The younger guys are starting to click,” Werner said. “They are learning a lot of technique and we are getting to know the base defense.”
MSU NOTES: Today the Racers practiced in shorts and worked on kickoff return for the first time. The offensive line worked on finishing blocks.
MSU also ran a drill with the defense focusing on collapsing toward the quarterback on the draw play, or finding the quarterback to block on the interception return.
