Safety J.R. Webber had a stellar first season for the Racers in 2005, ranking eighth on the team in tackles with 31 (22 solo), and forcing a fumble for the Racer defense, which ranked first in the Ohio Valley Conference in pass defense, allowing just 161.0 yards a game through the air.
This spring, Webber has been working with the first-team defense, and has looked sharp in both individual and group drills as one of the few veterans left over from the Racer defense of 2005.
“Defensively, we have a couple of young guys who will have to step up and fill some spots,” Webber said. “A few of the young guys will even have to start.”

MSU NOTES: The Racers practiced for the first time since Thursday today, working out in full pads in temperatures that reached the mid-80's. The Racers got back to doing the basic drills they have been performing all spring, as the Racers seemed to get back in the flow of practice.
WERNER UPDATE: Will Werner now has the cast off of his right ankle, and is in a walking boot. Werner said his recuperation process is “about three weeks ahead of schedule”, and he plans to walk on the foot in about two or three weeks.
RACER FOOTBALL COOKOUT: The Racers spring game is coming up on April 21 at 7 p.m. at Roy Stewart Stadium. The team is having a cookout before the spring game and everyone is invited. The cost is $6 per person and all fans, students and parents are asked to RSVP to Diana Waller, MSU's football secretary. Her number is 270-809-6181.
