The Murray State Lady Racers will have to battle from behind if they are to win their seventh Ohio Valley Conference golf championship. Their 311 team score Tuesday was three shots better than the day before, but Jacksonville State fired a tourney record 300 and leads MSU by 15 strokes heading into Wednesday's final round of the O'Reilly OVC Women's Golf Championship at Drake Creek Golf Club in Ledbetter, Ky.
If the Lady Racers cannot come back and win the title, they'll look back to the second round when some good rounds were close to being great rounds.
Christi Baron came home with a team-best, two over par 74. She had a stretch of seven holes beginning at number four where she played them one-over par. Baron had 10 pars and four birdies, but five bogeys kept her round from being even better.
Julie Bennett came home with four over par 76. She scored 10 pars and two birdies. Six bogeys held her round down as well. Bennett and Baron both capped the second round by scoring hard earned pars at the par-4 18th, a monster hole of 383 yards, all up hill, it plays more like a par-5.
Ilka Loubser who had the Lady Racers best round Monday with a 76, came home Tuesday with a 79. She started the round with a bogey on the first three holes, but salvaged a decent score with nine pars and a birdie on the par-3 8th.
MSU's other counted score came from Lauren Hughes with an 82, the same score she had in round one.
Ashley Kelbough's 86 did not count toward the MSU total.
For the round, MSU's average score was 77.75. The Lady Racers scored 32 pars and 9 birdies.
MSU head coach Velvet Milkman and team came away feeling they could've gotten more out of round two.
I thought we played well today,
"Christi and Julie carried us, but we're still leaving some shots out there," Milkman said. "Good thing for us, the whole team has been able to bounce back from mistakes and still get a good round on the card."
Milkman added, "The deal with the final round is, you can't have any mistakes and expect to catch
"However, we're not out of it.”
