The Murray State Racers did not have the great round they were looking for in the first day of the O'Reilly Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship, however with tough course conditions (including rain most of the morning) at the Country Club of Paducah, Ky., the Racers are in the hunt for their first league title since 1991.
After one round, six teams have a chance, first place
The Racers are in the middle, tied for fifth place with Tennessee Tech, both shot a score of 300 today.
The Racers top scorers were Kyle Shirley and Will Cox who both shot 73 and are in a 10-player log jam for fourth place. Shirley felt like he missed out on a very good round, while Cox was happy to salvage what he did. Shirley was three-under par after 13 holes but suffered a triple bogey coming in. Cox was four over after eight but rallied with birdies on nine, 10, 14 and 18.
“I saw a lot of the course today,” Cox said. “Being three over early, I feel very happy to get in with a 73.”
“The pins will get tougher, I know that.” Cox added. “We just have to keep grinding on every shot, each one is important.”
After Shirley and Cox with twin 73's, Nick Griffin and Jamie Frazier added 77's and sit in 29th place. Michael Craft eagled the 18th hole, but came home with an 82.
With every team bunched up, MSU head coach Eddie Hunt hopes his team can make a move in the second round.
“I felt like we'd shoot better than 300, but the rain this morning made the course play tougher,” Hunt said. “The
“I think they all know we can play better as a team,” Hunt added. “The good thing is we're still in it and sometimes if you don't take of business in the first round you can shoot yourself out of it.”
The field is comprised of 50 players from 10 OVC teams. The Country Club of Paducah course is playing 6.872 yards at a par of 72. There were five eagles score in the round on each by Murray State (Michael Craft on 18), Jacksonville State (Julian Colmenares), Tennessee Tech (Braxton Hunter), Samford (Andrew Villareal) and Morehead State (Austin Hansford).
Round two begins Monday morning at 8:30 a.m.
