The awards were established by "Diverse: Issues In Higher Education" magazine to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. The awards were named in honor of professional tennis player Arthur Ashe, inspired by his commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis.
