The running backs and tight ends worked on catching short passes, then absorbing contact without fumbling, while the wide receivers also worked on ball protection.
The offensive line worked on getting a quick first step off the line of scrimmage and creating holes for the running back.
The quarterbacks worked on timing patterns and fade routes to wide receivers with defenders clinging to their heels.
The safeties worked on one-on-one coverage with a wide receiver, and deflecting any passes around their area.
“We're where I thought we'd be,” said defensive backs coach Mark Lister. “There are things we have to clean up, but we can get the adjustments made. We're young at spots. We just have to get the young guys to feel the sense of urgency. They have to understand what's coming. We've turned up the heat to get them to understand the tempo of college football.”
The safeties along with the rest of the defense also focused on interceptions and interception returns, defending a quarterback draw, and finding the quarterback to block after an interception.
“It's been hot but this is going to get us through the season, it's going to get us through the third and fourth quarters,” said junior defensive back Chris Fountain. “Coach Lister is teaching us to be disciplined. He's hard on us and I like it. It's all about discipline so you can make plays.”
Special teams worked on kickoffs and kickoff coverage today as well.
The Racers will return to the practice field on Saturday at 3:10
