Racers Focus On The Basics In 'Heated' Practice

Today, the linebackers worked with defensive coordinator Rich Nagy on moving from side to side while hurdling pads, all while keeping their heads up and catching a ball thrown from Nagy. The defensive linemen worked on recovering fumbles from the line of scrimmage and diving full extension after a loose ball on pads. The defensive backs worked on breaking up passes on short slant routes.
On offense, the wide receivers worked on catching balls and staying in-bounds, and catching fades with coach Kevin Cahill on their heels, serving as a defensive back. The fullbacks worked on blocking and protection, and the quarterbacks worked on ball placement, throwing to receivers' back shoulder, numbers, and low throws.
The special teams worked on punt formation and protection, while strength coach Justin Cecil worked individually with players for the second consecutive day with a medicine ball to improve strength and with a large elastic strap to improve balance.
Senior punter Tim Wright is looking forward to the opportunity to get on the field in a mere two weeks.
"We're excited that it's only two weeks away," Wright said. "We're all pumped up and we're ready to get out there. Camp's been good, everyone is working hard. This is the hardest working team as far as being together and total effort I've been a part of. We have progressed further than last spring, that's for sure."
The Racers will return to the practice field on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Murray State opens its 82nd season of college football on Sept. 2 when the team travels to Columbia, Mo., to face the University of Missouri at 6 p.m. The Racers first home game of the Matt Griffin era will be on Sept. 23 when the team faces
