The Murray State women's soccer team won a thrilling 2-1 Ohio Valley Conference match Friday against Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tenn., in the process the Racers moved to 3-2 in the league and 8-6 overall.
The match was scoreless until the 26th minute when a pair of seniors teamed up for the first goal when MSU's Kara Carlile assisted Jaclyn Ramage on her first score of the season for a 1-0 Racer lead.
The Racers out shot the Governors 6-3 in the opening half as goalkeeper Tara Isbell was so well protected by the MSU defense that she wasn't required to make a save.
APSU tied the score at 1-1 in the 67th minute when Ashley Michels was awarded and made a penalty kick.
Murray State regained the lead in the 78th minute when Jen Nowak scored her third goal of the season off a rebound from a shot taken by Kellyn Robison and the Racers had a 2-1 lead.
MSU held off APSU the rest of the way for the win.
"We fought hard and it was exciting to see two of our seniors come away with a goal,” MSU head coach Beth Acreman said. “Jaclyn Ramage scored just at the right time to put us ahead in the first half then Jen Nowak did a great job at putting away our second.”
Acreman had much to say about the leadership the team is getting from their seniors.
“Carlile, Meyer, and Peios did a solid job again for us in the back and it was another great team effort to give us the win, our seniors are leading the way," Acreman said.
The Racers have won three straight and five of their last seven.
"We are playing with a lot of passion and intensity right now,” Acreman said. “We have been working on the staying more consistent for the entire game without any let downs.”
Acreman said it all starts with her seniors.
“I have a great group of seniors that are helping lead the team and I know we will need that going into our second game this weekend.”
