After having one of best single-game throwing games by a Murray State quarterback in school history, redshirt freshman Jeff Ehrhardt was named the Ohio Valley Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week for the week of Oct. 28, the league office announced on Sunday. Ehrhardt shares the honor with UT Martin quarterback Cade Thompson.
Ehrhardt (St. Louis, Mo.) was honored after going 29-for-43 for a career-high 344 yards and five touchdowns against No. 16 Eastern Kentucky Saturday afternoon at Stewart Stadium. The five touchdowns, which were thrown to five different receivers, were the most thrown by a Racers' quarterback since Michael Proctor tossed a school record six touchdown passes against Austin Peay in 1989. The 344-yard passing performance is the 18th-best passing performance by a MSU quarterback and the third best ever by a freshman behind a 367-yard effort against Tennessee Tech and a 425-yard effort against Western Kentucky by Stewart Childress in 2000.
Ehrhardt connected with nine different receivers and led the Racers on scoring drives of 76, 83, 70, 79 and 80 yards. All five scoring drives took 3:24 or less. He began his day with a nine-yard strike to running back Josh Jones and followed it up with a 36-yard hook up to freshman Marcus Harris. He would close out the second quarter with a 20-yard connection to Rod Harper. After not scoring in the third quarter, Ehrhardt began the fourth quarter by hitting DeAngelo Nelson from 30-yards out and later hitting Lee McGinnis crossing in the endzone from 11 yards.
On the season, Ehrhardt is 156-for-275 for 1,757 yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions. His 16 TD passes lead the OVC, while his 1,757 yards rank second.
The Racers return to the field on Nov. 3 when they travel to take on Tennessee State. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at LP Field in Nashville.
