JODY ADAMS EXCERPTS FROM THE WEEKLY MEDIA CONFERENCE (Dec. 3)
On the focus and preparation for the OVC opener:
Over the last two days, we really broke down our defensive scheme in the halfcourt and fullcourt and went over some things that we weren't doing well. Also, offensively, we went over the things we have in place to make sure we understand what we want out of certain looks. We always play against the match-up, it seems, and that's something that we really wanted to break down for when we call the zone again. It was more about us for the past two days. Today, we began to work in plans for the Eastern Kentucky game, and we are beginning to work a little of both, and we're beginning to work in some new things for when we start OVC play.
On Eastern Kentucky's guard corps and the game plan for that challenge:
I think we'll show some different things. When you play a great guard corps, you want to try to keep them off-balance. I don't think any one of our guards is going to be able to stop their guards; I think it's going to be collectively, a team effort. Hopefully, our team defense will weigh on them over a 40-minute span. The three guards play 31 minutes-plus, so I hope our pressure will begin to bother them. But, it will be a team effort in guarding three talented guards.
They're going to look to Crystal Jones, to go inside. They have a good inside-out, like UTC. They can step out to the three-point range, and they can bring it inside. We'll have to do a great job against them defensively. Our players know that. We started talking about that today, about how we want to guard them in different schemes.
On the team's play in the second half against Miami (Ohio) on Nov. 28:
I wasn't pleased with how we started in that game. Miami (Ohio) is a very, very good team. You saw the size of their athletes. I thought we started slowly with the things that we typically do -- jumping to the pass, being on helpside -- we didn't do that, and they cut us up. They used their size against us and our quickness, and because we weren't in great position, they took advantage of us. Then, we went back with our speed in the second half, which is what we wanted to do, to expose what they didn't have that we did, and it worked. It was almost too late, but it worked, keeping the pressure on for 94 feet.
On Alaina Lee's play in that game:
She used her speed to get good positioning, and that's something that Alaina can do well. She has the speed to get in front. When we were beginning to press in the second half and generating a little more activity, she's the one that you want running and chasing and getting in between. She's so light on her feet, as soon as you make contact with her, she's going to fly and draw the offensive foul. You have to guard against a great defender like that.
On the team's conditioning, shooting 83 percent from the line thus far this season:
I think we're in good condition; I wouldn't say "great." We spend 45 minutes to an hour catching, passing and running every day. Then, we go over the things we need to take care of offensively and defensively. We get free throws in between our sets and water breaks. But, you'll see them before and after practice, getting that time in with free throws. That is a goal of ours, to get to the free-throw line 20 times a game.
