Racers Place Second At OVC Championships

The Murray State rifle team placed second at the O'Reilly Ohio Valley Conference Championships, held Saturday and Sunday at Jacksonville, Ala. The Racers now await word as to whether they qualified for the NCAA Championships, to be held March 9-10 in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The Racers had an aggregate (air rifle and smallbore scores combined) of 4577 out of a possible 4800 behind host Jacksonville State's 2342. Tennessee-Martin's mixed team was third at 4542, while Tennessee Tech was fourth with a 4528, Morehead State's men's team was fifth at 4392 and Morehead State's women's team had a 4139. Tennessee-Martin's women's team, which took part in air rifle only, had a 2208, while Austin Peay, which also participated in air rifle only, had a 2173.
MSU opened the Championships on Saturday with a disappointing 2253 out of a possible 2400 in smallbore, placing fourth in that area behind Jacksonville State (2283), Tennessee-Martin's mixed team (2266) and Tennessee Tech (2254). Morehead State's men's team was fifth in smallbore with a 2189, while Morehead's women's team had a 2023.
The Racers bounced back on Sunday in air rifle, placing second in that category with a 2324 out of a possible 2400. JSU had a 2342, while Tennessee-Martin's mixed team was third at 2276, Tennessee Tech had a 2274, Tennessee-Martin's women's team had a 2208, Morehead State's men's team had a 2203, Austin Peay had a 2173 and Morehead State's women's team had a 2116.
Junior Cameron Hicks of Roy, Wash., was named to the All-OVC First Team in smallbore with a score of 573 out of a possible 600. He was also named to the All-OVC Second Team in air rifle with a 585 out of a possible 600. Sophomore Bryant Wallizer of Little Orleans, Md., was named to the All-OVC First Team in air rifle with a 586.
In air rifle, senior Brandy Boucherie of Henderson, Ky., fired a 579, while junior Dan Belluzzo of Chisholm, Minn., shot a 574. In smallbore, sophomore Kevin Witbrodt of Sunset Hills. Mo., fired a 566, while Wallizer shot a 562 and Belluzzo fired a 552.
