Murray State's Anna Lask was selected as the Ohio Valley Conference Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today from its Brentwood, Tenn., headquarters. Lask, a senior from Louisville, Ky., won both of her singles matches and both of her doubles matches during the past week.
All of Lask's matches were played at the No. 1 position. Lask beat the top players from Samford and Jacksonville State in straight sets. She beat Samford's Anna Jackson, 6-4 and 6-2, and then on the next day beat JSU's Erin Higgs, 6-4 and 6-2.
Lask has won seven straight singles matches and is 8-1 (2-0 OVC) on the season.
In doubles play, Lask teamed with her twin sister Rachael to beat Samford's Sarah McKey and Emily White, 8-5, and JSU's Higgs and Babette Lombardo, 8-3.
Lask's play this season has propelled her up Murray State's all-time wins lists. She is currently ranked second in program history with 94 doubles victories. She needs just seven more wins to take over the top spot from April Horning (1980-84). Lask is currently tied for seventh with 86 career singles victories. She sits in fourth place on the combined singles and doubles list with 180 career victories.
Murray State opened conference play with a close loss to Samford, 4-3, and a shutout of Jacksonville State, 7-0. The Racers are 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the OVC.
Next up for the Racers is a trip to Tempe, Ariz., for the Sun Devil Invitational on March 22-24. The event will be played in a tournament format and includes Murray State, Kansas and DePaul.
