Murray State's football team will open spring practice on Monday. The Racers first practice of the spring will begin at 3:45 p.m., and will be held on the MSU football practice field next to Stewart Stadium. The Racers will have 14 practices leading up to the annual Blue/Gold Spring Game on April 21.
With the Stewart Stadium field reconstruction project expected to start on April 15, the spring game will also be held on the practice field and will begin at 12 p.m.
“We're excited to get outside,” said head coach Matt Griffin. “The kids have worked very hard during the conditioning phase, which was very productive.”
Murray State returns seven starters on offense and eight starters on defense from the 2006 squad. A total of 34 letterwinners return to the team in 2007.
“We have more competition at every position this year and that will make everyone better,” Griffin said. “There are no starters, everyone has a clean slate as we start spring practice.”
Griffin will have as many as 53 players returning from the 2006 squad on the practice field this spring. In addition, three players that joined the program in January will also be available to take part in spring practice.
Spring practice will give 14 freshmen that redshirted during the 2006 campaign their first chance to run the MSU offensive and defensive systems. During the fall those players primarily served on the scout team, running the opponents' systems during practice.

Murray State will open its 2007 season on Aug. 30 when the team travels to Louisville, Ky., to face the University of Louisville at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
