The Murray State Lady Racers have qualified for a berth in this season's Women's National Invitation Tournament, according to information found at the tournament's Web site, www.WomensNIT.com.
"The Women's National Invitation Tournament will expand its field to 48 games this spring for the first time in event history," a release on the Web site reads. "This eight-team expansion will allow for an automatic bid from every conference.
"Thirty-one spots will be filled with one team per conference. That team will be the highest-finishing team in the conference's regular-season standings that does not advance to the NCAA Tournament. As in the past, the teams' records must be at or above .500."
Murray State finished in second place in the Ohio Valley Conference at 15-5, and currently sports an overall record of 21-9 (.700). The Women's NIT field of 48 will be announced on Monday, March 12, following the NCAA Tournament selection, seen on ESPN and ESPN-U at 7 p.m. Central Time.
Teams that won their conference's regular-season title but did not win their conference tournament will also qualify for a berth in the Women's NIT. Other berths will be filled by the top teams available, based on selection criteria used in the past.
The first round of the Women's NIT will be held March 14-16, and will feature 16 games (32 teams). The second round will be played on Match 16-18, and will feature the first-round winners against 16 teams that received first-round byes.
The third round will be played on March 19-21, with the quarterfinals to be held on March 23-25, the semifinals on March 26-28 and the championship game on March 31.
