Murray State has added two coaches to its football staff and has hired a current assistant into a full time position, head coach Matt Griffin announced today. Aaron Hutsell, who served as the cornerbacks coach during the 2006 season, has been hired as a fulltime assistant and will be the team's defensive secondary coach. Kenyatta McCoy joins the staff as the cornerbacks coach and Carl Mintken will serve as the running backs coach.
McCoy has worked at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., and two Memphis area high schools. Mintken gained coaching experience at Springfield College and at Maine Maritime Academy.
Hutsell joined the Racer program in December 2005 after serving two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.
“We're excited to have Aaron move into a full time slot,” Griffin said. “In the year he's been here he has exemplified what our staff is about. He's a great teacher and a relentless recruiter.”
McCoy spent the 2005 and 2006 seasons serving a number of roles at Lincoln University. He coached the quarterbacks, tight ends and wide receivers, and was the program's passing game coordinator, academic advisor, recruiting coordinator and pro-liaison.
His responsibilities included breaking down defensive coverage to establish a passing attack, tracking student-athletes' academic progress, creating a recruiting plan and making contact with NFL teams concerning qualified senior players.
“Kenyatta brings a wealth of experience from a lot of positions,” Griffin said. “He's been a high school coach, a college coach, an admissions representative, video coordinator and a recruiting coordinator. All of those experiences will be a huge benefit to our staff.”
McCoy served as the varsity assistant head coach at Westwood High School in Memphis, Tenn., during the 2004-05 academic year. He was the team's offensive coordinator, strength and conditioning coach, quarterbacks coach and defensive backs coach.
Under his guidance Westwood's offense averaged 250 yards per game.
Prior to working at Westwood, McCoy was the assistant offensive coordinator at Ridgeway High School in Memphis. He coached the quarterbacks, wide receivers and defensive backs.
McCoy helped Ridgeway to a 14-1 record and the Tennessee Class 3A State Championship in 2002. In addition to winning a state title while at Ridgeway, McCoy produced a number of all-metro defensive backs and wide receivers. His defensive backs intercepted 32 passes during the 2002 season.

Mintken joins the Murray State program after serving as a graduate assistant offensive line coach at Springfield College during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. He was also Springfield's junior varsity head coach and offensive coordinator.
“Carl is a welcome addition to our staff,” said Griffin. “He's a young coach that is about to finish up his master's. He brings a unique perspective and a wealth of enthusiasm to the team.”
He helped Springfield capture the 2006 Empire 8 Athletic Conference championship and advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. Mintken's work with the offensive line helped the team lead the conference in rushing in 2005 (339.6 yards per game) and in 2006 (374.7 yards per game).
At Springfield, Mintken was responsible for all tackle and tight end practice and game preparation, weekly game planning, and weekly cut-ups and film breaks. His recruiting area included New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont.
Mintken led the Springfield junior varsity squad to a 3-1 record in 2006.
He spent the 2003 and 2004 seasons coaching at Maine Maritime Academy. Mintken coached the defensive line in 2003 and the offensive line in 2004. He was responsible for practice and game preparations, and designed and implemented a strength and conditioning program.
Mintken earned a bachelor's of science degree with a concentration in physical education from Springfield College in 2003. He is working on a master's degree in physical education with a concentration in athletic administration from Springfield.
As an undergraduate at Springfield, Mintken was a four-year letterman as an offensive tackle. He helped his team win the 2000 and 2002 Freedom Football Conference championships and earn trips to the NCAA playoffs in both of those seasons. With Mintken on the offensive line, Springfield won national rushing titles in 2000 and 2002.
Murray State will open its 2007 season on Aug. 30 when the team travels to Louisville, Ky., to face the University of Louisville at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium at 6:30 p.m. CT.
