The Murray State Women's Golf squad finished a successful 2006-07 season last week at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships where they came home with a third place finish. Several Lady Racers also brought home conference awards.
Murray State freshman Andrea Downer was named to the All-OVC Newcomer team and All-OVC First team ending a season that most first year players can only dream of. Downer finished the season with a 78.2 scoring average in 29 total rounds, good for seventh best in the OVC. In 12 events, Downer, from Surrey, England, turned in six top-10 finishes. She also finished fifth in the OVC Championship with rounds of 80-76-79=235 and was named to the All-Tournament team.
“I'm very proud of Andrea,” MSU head coach Velvet Milkman said. “She had a tremendous first season and having the experience from her freshman season will only help her as a sophomore.”
MSU senior Christi Baron went out in style in her final season in the program by being named to the All-OVC First team. Baron, of Louisville, Ky., was one of the most consistent players in the league over the last four seasons.
“Christi has been a joy to coach,” Milkman said. “As I have had said before, she is going to be successful in whatever she decides to do in her life, and I am so happy to have had the chance to coach her here at Murray State.”
