Murray State's football team had a visitor at practice Friday morning that it had not seen this spring, the moon. The Racers' Friday practice began at 6:20 a.m., with the moon still out and temperatures in the low 30s.
Head coach Matt Griffin's team spent a portion of practice continuing to work on technique and fundamentals through a series of drills. The second half of the hour long practice included an 11-on-11 scrimmage.
During the scrimmage, quarterback Chris Franklin completed a 50-yard pass down the right sideline to Rod Harper. Two plays later Franklin hit Charlie Jordan in the backfield and the running back turned it into a 30-yard scoring play. Jordan raced to the left sideline and then cut back inside at the five yard line to find the end zone.
The final minutes of the scrimmage included a challenge by Griffin to both his offense and defense. The Racers were put into a series of three, third down and three yards to go situations. The offense was challenged to convert the third down, the defense was challenged to make the stop.
The defense made stops all three times.
Practice started with station work for the defense. The players rotated through a series of drills focused on footwork and technique.
Meanwhile the quarterbacks worked on throwing mechanics and the running backs and fullbacks went through a series of drills focused on lateral movement and change of direction.
The Racers' will have Saturday and Sunday off before resuming their practice schedule on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Murray State will open its 2007 season on Aug. 30 when the team travels to Louisville, Ky., to face the University of Louisville at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 6:30 p.m. CT.
