Murray State Rowing Set To Compete At NCAA Regional

Murray State's women's rowing team will compete in the 2007 Aramark South/Central Region Sprints on Saturday, on Melton Hill Lake, in Oak Ridge, Tenn. MSU will participate in three events during the NCAA regional: the open 4+, the novice 8+ and the varsity 8+.

Murray State's varsity-eight crew is currently ranked 84^th among 300 squads from across the country.

“This is going to be a very exciting weekend for our program,” said MSU Head Coach Bill McLean. “We're going to face very strong competition. We'll be going up against some of the best programs in the country.”

First round action for the open 4+ begins at 9 a.m., on Saturday. The Racer novice-eight crew will begin first round racing at 9:40 a.m. The varsity-eight crew gets underway at 11:40 a.m.

The competition for the Racer varsity-eight crew will be tough. The regional includes nine boats ranked in the national top 20. Included in the competition are No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 Minnesota, No. 11 Central Florida, No. 12 Ohio State, No. 13 Michigan State, No. 17 Tennessee and No. 19 Louisville.

In its last competition, Murray State earned three medals at the Midwest Collegiate Championships on April 28. In addition, the varsity-eight crew turned in its fastest time of the season.

The NCAA currently divides Division I women's rowing programs into five different regions: South, Central, Mid-Atlantic, New England and West.

Unlike the New England, Mid-Atlantic and West Regions, the Central and South Region Championships is the only regatta of its kind in the NCAA, where competition is relegated to intercollegiate programs which compete in both the Central and South regions. Totaling 30 teams, the Central and South Regions are comprised of squads from Florida in the South, to Virginia in the East, Nebraska in the West and Minnesota in the North.

Murray State is a member of the Central Region.
