Murray State Football Preseason Practice #13 & #14
8/15/2007 5:00:00 AM | Football
The Murray State football team completed another two-a-day today, practicing at 8:25 a.m. for about 90 minutes, and again at 3:45 p.m. for about 45 minutes.
In the morning practice, the Racers worked on most of the same things they worked on in yesterday's practice, including the offense mainly working on footwork, ball protection, and agility drills. The defense worked on reading the offensive player's body language, adjusting to make the play.
The focus of most of the afternoon practice was special teams, as several different units worked on punt returns and kickoff returns. The Racers showed improvement in these areas, as Antoinne Lightfoot, Rod Harper, and Derrick Townsel all returned kicks for touchdowns.
Racer head coach Matt Griffin said there is a vast difference through 10 days of practice than there was for the first preseason practice on Aug. 6.
"I am pleased with the fact that we haven't had a lot of mental busts," Griffin said. "It's good that the kids aren't struggling with the heat and as a result of that they have bad practices. Our guys are in shape and that hasn't happened."
"I also have to credit our seniors with keeping all of the young guys focused. We just need to keep on working, taking care of ourselves, and be crisp with everything we do on the field."
Griffin also announced at the conclusion of the afternoon practice that tomorrow's scrimmage has been moved to Friday, at the same time, 3:35 p.m. The scrimmage originally scheduled for Friday morning at 8:15 a.m. has been cancelled, and the Racers will resume their preseason schedule with a regular practice tomorrow at 3:35 p.m.
Murray State opens its 83rd season of college football on Aug. 30 at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, where they will face the University of Louisville Cardinals. Kick-off time is set for 6:30 p.m.
