“This will be big this evening,” said Head Coach Matt
MSU opened today's first practice with punt return work and ball security. The team then moved to one-on-one work. The linebackers and running backs faced off, while the wide receivers and secondary battled each other.
The linebackers and running backs competed in a pair of one-on-one drills. The first was a goal line stand drill in which the linebacker had to stop the running back from crossing the goal line. In the second drill the running back had to block the linebacker and keep him from reaching the quarterback.
The wide receivers and secondary went one-on-one in a pass drill.
During one-on-one drills, the offensive line focused on pass protection and worked on spins and rips.
“The consistency today was very good,”
After a pass skeleton drill, the offense and defense faced of in a two-minute drill exercise. During the first session, the situation had the offense down by six with the ball and two minutes on the clock. The defense forced stops on both possessions.
On the first possession quarterback Jeff Ehrhardt completed a 20-yard and a 15-yard pass. True freshman John Jean-Baptiste knocked down a ball in the end zone intended for Rod Harper. Sophomore defensive tackle Will Roach got to Ehrhardt for a sack and on the next play senior Nathan Williams picked up a fumble and raced 60 yards down the left sideline to end the offensive possession.
On the second offensive possession a blitzing Taylor Lanigan knocked down quarterback Chris Franklin and forced an incomplete pass. True freshman Omre Harris recorded a sack to force a third and 15. Two plays later the defense came up with another sack on fourth down to end the drive.
The team also conducted two possessions with the offense down by two points and one minute on the clock. The first possession ended on a loss of downs. Senior Derrick Parrott ended the next possession when he intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown.
Thursday's morning practice ended with point-after-touchdown work. Several kickers received reps during the drill.
