Downer Takes First Collegiate Title, Newcomb 8th At Sea Trail

The Murray State golf teams had a successful weekend at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate with an individual championship for Andrea Downer and an eighth place finish for Nick Newcomb. The MSU team finishes were high as well with a fourth place finish for the MSU women's team and a second place showing for the men's squad.

Andrea Downer arrived at Murray State a year ago from Surrey, England and quickly established herself as the Racers' number one player. She won the Sea Trail event with rounds of 74-71-70=215, her total was one-under par. Downer wins her first collegiate championship by playing the last 36 holes at three-under and was the only competitor in the field of 78 that finished under par.

Downer's previous best finish was a fourth place showing last fall at Arkansas State, she now has six top-10 finishes in her MSU career.

As a team, the Racers moved up one spot in the final round to fourth of 14 teams with a total score of 918 on rounds of 311-308-299. The host team, Elon University won their own event with a score of 904 in a scorecard playoff over Bethune-Cookman. Xavier finished third at 907.

MSU's Alexandra Hintereger finished 11^th after scores of 76-77-77=230, while Bethany Yates rallied to finish 16^th after scores of 81-79-72=232. Caroline Lagerborg's scores of 80-81-80=241 landed her in 40^th place, with Ashley Yates finishing 49^th with scores of 81-81-84=246.

Kaysin Hutching played as an individual and finished 71^st with scores of 86-88-94=268.

The MSU men's team rallied to finish second to Elon with back to back scores of 279 to go along with their first round 288 for a total score of 846. Elon's total score was 828. Bethune-Cookman finished third at 855, while William & Mary finished fourth with a score of 856.

Nick Newcomb was the Racers' best finisher in eighth with scores of 75-68-67=210, while Mitchell Moore placed 13^th with scores of 70-73-69=212. Jerry Price had a 16^th place finish with rounds of 69-72-72=213, while Jared Wolfe placed 37^th with scores of 75-71-71=218. Cameron Carrico had rounds of 74-68-76=218 to also finish 37^th.

The MSU men host the MSU Invitational Oct. 1 at the home of Racer golf, Miller Memorial. The Racer women's team will be in action again Oct. 08 at the Arkansas State Lady Indian Classic in Jonesboro.
