The Murray State Racers suffered a sudden death shootout defeat to
The Racers lost what was only the third shootout in program history 5-4 to the Eagles and ended their season 12-6-2.
Racer Head Coach Beth Acreman and team won the OVC regular season title for the first time but had to deal with a shocking end to their season.
"My whole goal this season was to create a team that plays soccer,” Acreman said. “We put on a good show, but it didn't go the way we wanted.”
The Racers fell behind early but tied the game in the 28th minute when Sophie Hargreaves made a penalty kick after she was fouled driving near the Eagles goal.
The game stayed that way through the half.
MSU went ahead 2-1 in the 72nd minute on a goal from Kalli McCoy when she scored on a long crossing pass from Hargreaves.
The Racers could not hold to lead and
MSU had some scoring chances in the two 10-minute overtimes, particularly with 7:12 left in the second overtime when Rachel Wright's shot from close range was stopped.
The match was forced into a shootout period, with each team taking five shots.
Each team was stopped on their first shot, and then each team made four consecutive shots. The Racers sixth attempt was stopped and Morehead made their attempt to win the shootout segment 5-4.
The Racers out shot the Eagles 29-12 in the game and had a 15-6 edge in shots on goal.
“We kept to our game plan and they kept to theirs,” Acreman said. “We just didn't get a goal when we needed it. Shootouts are horrible for the players when it comes down to one shot.”
Still, the Racers can hold their heads high after a season that included a school record 12 wins and the program's first OVC regular season championship.
“There isn't anything more I could ask of our team, it's hard to see it end like this.” Acreman added. “But I'm happy with where the Racer Soccer program is going.”
