Former MSU Soccer star Laura Oppegard has been named the head girls coach at her alma mater,
Oppegard, 23, told the Lexington Herald-Leader she's ready to take on the challenge of taking over the program that she played for from 2001-02.
"At my age, it's definitely easy to connect with the kids," Oppegard said. "I've been a player for so long. I still know what's going on, and I can show them how to do stuff instead of just telling
them."
Oppegard played for Beth Acreman at MSU.
“It is always great when one of our former players does well and gets into the coaching profession,” Acreman said. “Laura will be a super coach because she knows the game and can communicate it very well.”
Oppegard was a two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection as a midfielder. She played in 76 matches from 2003-06 for the Racers, scoring four goals, and handing out six assists.
She was also a two-year member of the OVC's Commissioner's Honor Roll and helped the MSU program lead the nation in GPA according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
