Former Murray State running back Chad Cook was selected in the 38th round by Team Michigan in the newly created All-American Football League Draft held January 26.
Cook was the 14th running back to be selected and the third by his team. Team Michigan selected East Central's Gerome Castleberry with the 17th overall pick and later selected Elizabeth City State running back Rayshawn Askew in the 14th round.
"I congratulate Chad on being selected to participate in new All-American Football League," Director of Athletics Allen Ward said. "I'm proud that he earned his degree and has the opportunity to continue his football career. I wish him the best in this endeavor."
The AAFL is a for-profit, professional football league which employs only those players who have both completed their college football eligibility and earned a four-year degree. This policy is expected to have a very positive impact on universities' NCAA Graduation Success Rate and their Academic Progress Rate. To the extent practical, graduates of host universities will play for the team hosted by their alma mater.
Cook played for the Racers from 2003-06 and finished his career with 2,095 yards on 457 carries and 24 touchdowns. He ranks seventh on the school's all-time rushing list and fourth in career touchdowns. His most productive season came in 2004 when he rushed for a team-best 892 yards and 11 touchdowns.
He is tied for seventh on the MSU all-time list with seven 100-yard rushing games, including a 223-yard effort against Indiana State in 2006 that ranks as the eighth best single-game rushing performance by a Racer running back.
Cook and his Michigan teammates will kickoff the season on April 12 when they travel to take on Tennessee at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville. Their home opener is April 19 against Florida at Ford Field.
