Spring Practice #2
3/27/2008 5:00:00 AM | Football
The intensity picked up Thursday morning as Murray State took the field for the second day of spring practice. The practice was conducted on the turf at Stewart Stadium in helmets and shorts.
Head Coach Matt Griffin addressed the team both at the beginning and end of practice, telling the team "you are accountable on every play," and "you are only as strong as your weakest link."
After stretching, the team went through sprints before breaking up to work in individual groups. The offensive linemen were working on their blocking techniques while the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers worked on their pass routes and timing.
The defensive line worked on getting to the quarterback, tackling and reading their defensive keys.
The offense and defense came together with the offensive and defensive lines working against each other on one end of the field, while the offensive backfield went against the linebackers and secondary in passing drills.
Despite being in helmets and shorts, the team period was very intense with both sides of the ball wanting to win every play. The competitive nature brought about very intense competition, a sight that was applauded by Griffin "as coming together as a team."
Practice wrapped up with a six-on-six relay race that pitted the fastest guys on offense against the fastest guys on defense. Running was on the line as the winner only had to run two gassers, as opposed to four for the loser. Unlike the tug-of-war competition yesterday, the defense came out ahead by three steps today.
The Racers return to the practice field on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
