Rowing Hosts Alabama at Kenlake

Fresh off the best competition in school history, the Murray State rowing team hosted Alabama today at Kenlake in Aurora, Ky.

Winds were out of the WSW at 10 miles per hour with gusts up to 15 mph. The weather was overcast with temperatures at 43 degrees, as all crews waded their shells into Kentucky Lake as the high lake levels have made the dock unaccessible.

In the varsity eight competition, Murray State got off the line well. However, after about 20 strokes, there was a bauble that caused the boat to lose its run and the crew fell out of rhythm. The crew never fully recovered and were off their game plan, which was to row the body at 32 strokes per minute. Alabama rowed their body two beats higher and were able to pull away from MSU for the win, finishing 9.34 seconds ahead of the Racers.

The Racers then came back strong with a victory in the novice four race, with plenty of open water, winning by 15.56 seconds.

In the 2k 2V8 race, MSU finished with a time of 7:21.03, which is consistent with their time last week in Oak Ridge (7:20).

In the N8, MSU rowed well against stronger competition, posting a time of 7:24.92.

Today's event definitely tested the Racers' endurance levels, as several MSU athletes rowed twice during today's competition, while Alabama did not double at all.

The Racers return to a familiar spot for their next competition, as they will take part in the SIRA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on April 19. The Racers shattered the school record in the varsity eight competition there just last weekend.
