Trus Takes Third At OVC Women's Golf Championship

The Murray State Racers dream of taking the Ohio Valley Conference Women's Championship wasn't realized Wednesday in Muscle Shoals, Ala. at The Shoals Golf Club with a second place finish.

The Racers, who had a five shot lead midway through round two, started Wednesday's round three four shots behind Jacksonville State. However, a final round 324, their highest of the event, put the Racers 21 shots behind the Gamecocks in the final standings. The Racers scores of 320-311-324=955 dropped them to second place. Eastern Kentucky had rounds of 334-309-314=957 and finished in third place. JSU won the event with rounds of 322-305-307=934.

MSU's Joyce Trus was named to the All-Tournament Team by finishing in a tie for third place in the medalist race with scores of 80-79-75=234. Alexandra Hinteregger placed sixth after scores of 78-78-81=237, while Bethany Yates was 19^th with scores of 84-78-83=245. Megan McKinney was in the running for medalist honors starting the final round tied for the lead, but finished with a 92. Her first two rounds were 78-76 for a total of 246 and 21^st place. Andrea Downer finished 28^th after scores of 85-81-85=251.

“I'm very disappointed in the way we played today,” MSU Head Coach Velvet Milkman. “Chalk it up to a lack of experience and our maturity level.”

The Racers took second place with a junior, two sophomores, and a freshman.

“I'm excited about or team,” Milkman added. “We have them all back next season and this will turn out to be a good team experience for us down the road.”

Murray State last won the OVC championship in 2004, which was the final of three straight wins in the event. Since then they have posted a fourth place finish in 2005, a third in 2006, second in 2007, and again this season. MSU has six championships and four second place finishes in the 15 years the OVC Women's Championship has been played.
