Racer Golf Stays In Second At OVC Championship
4/21/2008 5:00:00 AM | Men's Golf
The Murray State Racers strengthened their hold on second place in the Ohio Valley Men's Golf Championship Monday at the Country Club of Paducah, Ky. with a second round 301, four shots better than their first round 305. The Racers' total of 606 was ahead of third place Austin Peay.
The bad news for MSU is that while their play normally would have them in the thick of the race for the league title, this isn't a normal year.
The Racers and the rest of the OVC field are dealing with an EKU team that is threatening league records.
After the second place Racers and third place Austin Peay, the rest of the OVC field is finished by Tennessee Tech, Samford, Eastern Illinois, UT Martin,
Murray State remained in second place after a 1-under round of 71 by OVC All-Newcomer selection Nick Newcomb, who improved by four strokes from Sunday and is now tied for fourth place overall, just two strokes out of the lead. OVC Freshman of the Year Cameron Carrico had a round of 75 (+3) and is tied for eighth place, just eight strokes off the lead.
Jared Wolfe is in 20th place after a 78, while Jerry Price dropped to 23rd position after an 82. Mitchell Moore's 77 improved his standing to 33rd place.
The Racers will try and hang on to second place when the third and final round begins with an 8:30 a.m. CT tee time on Tuesday morning.
