Rowing Shatters School Record at John Hunter Regatta

The Murray State women's rowing team turned in its best time in the history of the program as the women's varsity eight took home the championship at the John Hunter Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tenn. on Saturday.
The boat, which featured Colleen Rice (coxswain), Anna Brown, Stephanie Kozuszek, Erin Sargent, Karen Delaney, Lyndsey Staples, Andria Kroner, Connie Gorman and Hannah Nelly, turned in a school-record time of 6:48, beating the old record by nearly 15 seconds.
"I am very excited about the way we rowed today, it was an awesome day," said head coach Bill McLean. "I was expecting us to a turn in a time around 6:55 and when I heard our time, I just started jumping around hugging everybody around."
The varstiy eight boat was not the only boat to enjoy success on Saturday, the novice eight and novice four boat each eased their way to victories.
The novice eight boat, consisting of Sara Eckler (coxsain), Christine Cervenka, Katelyn Campbell, Kari Weisenfeld, Jessica Stamper, Kelly Boyer, Katelyn Halicks, Leigh Erin Waddell and Kelly Anderson, was nearly a minute ahead of its nearest competitor.
The novice four boat, consisting of Erin Meranda (coxswain), Leigh Erin Waddell, Lindsay Hopkins, Carola Hechtel and Layne Hardison, outlasted its nearest competition by over 10 seconds.
The team returns to the water on April 12 when it hosts Alabama on the water at Kenlake.
