Spring Practice #9

The Murray State football began its third week of spring practice as it took to the field early Tuesday morning on the turf at Stewart Stadium.
"We focused on corrections from the scrimmage and I am pleased the way they reacted, especially on defense," said head coach Matt Griffin. "We went into a couple of down-and-distance's today, goaline, third-and short and third-and-medium, and it was very productive. The kids are working hard and you get a point in spring ball where you either keep moving forward or you stay stagnant. I think we have kept it going forward and we need to continue to do that."
The third week stayed true to form from the previous two weeks as the offense continued to implement more of their offense, while the defense continued to work on assignments and tackling.
Senior Nathan Williams continues to work his way back from injury and began the perimeter period of practice by leaping up for an interception on the first play.
During the team periods, MSU worked on short-yardage situations, both down-and-distance and goaline. The defense had the upper hand on this day as they stopped the inside running game and recorded a sack.
The Racers will have five more practices leading into the spring game and coach Griffin knows what his team needs to do over the next two weeks.
"You have to finish. These next couple of practices are huge," said Griffin. "We will really focus on assignment technique and really work on fundamentals these next two practices, leading into a big scrimmage on Saturday. The last week we have three practices, with one being the spring game. Two of them will let them recover a little bit and work on fundamentals and then finish things the right way, finish as a team."
The team returns to the field on Thursday morning at 5:30 a.m.
