Racer Golf Takes Fifth Straight MSU Invitational At Miller

The Murray State Men's Golf team successfully defended their MSU Invitational title Tuesday with a 10-shot win over
The Racers have won all five titles since the event started in 2004, and tied the tournament record for largest margin of victory.
MSU's rounds of 272-279-284=835 was enough to beat out
As much as MSU has dominated the team event, they have yet to win medalist honors.
Cameron Carrico and Jared Wolfe started the day one shot behind Jeff Pierce of
Wolfe finished fifth with rounds of 67-68-73=208, while Nick Newcomb took 13th with scores of 72-72-69=213. Hunter Ford came home 59th with rounds of 72-81-75=228.
Three MSU players were in the individual race. Mitchell Moore finished eighth with scores of 71-71-70=212. James Stevenson had scores of 78-73-72=223 and took 45th, while William Hunt finished 80-76-74=230 and took 63rd place.
The Racers have now recorded 13 straight top-five finishes dating back to last season.
MSU's next challenge is the UT Martin Skyhawk Classic Oct. 13-14 at
TOURNAMENT NOTES
The Racers shot 35 strokes better than when they won the event in 2007...835 to 870.
MSU's first round score of 272 was a tournament record.

The Racers can thank their win to their ability to play the Miller Memorial par fives. MSU led the field by playing those 17-under par. They also led the field with 57 birdies.
SIUE's Neal McCarty shot the second lowest total with a 201. Tennessee Tech's Scott Stallings set the record of 197 in 2005.
The low score of the tournament was the 64 Cameron Carrico shot in round one.
McCarty's 31 was the low score of the tournament on nine holes.
McCarty led the field of 82 competitors with 19 birdies, Carrico of MSU was second with 16.

The hardest hole of the event was the first and the fifth. Both are par fours and each played more than a half stroke over par. The easiest hole was the par-5 17th hole that played about a quarter stroke under par.
