The Murray State Women's Soccer squad put together their most complete match of the season in a 3-0 win over North Carolina-Asheville Friday at the Hampton Inn Classic at Cutchin Field.
The Racers improved to 3-2-0, while the Bulldogs dropped to 0-3-0.
The scoring started when Rachel Wright played a perfect pass just to the right of the UNCA box from Rebekah Clay for a 1-0 Racer lead in the 16th minute.
The Racers were pressed by the Bulldogs in the opening half, but still managed to keep it a 1-0 match at the half.
Wright hooked up with teammate Katie Wilson in the 48th minute to make it a 2-0 Racer lead when
The Racers put the match away in the 63rd minute with an outstanding play that began 20 yards past mid-field.
Veronika Pribyslavska took the ball from a Bulldog player and drove it some 50 yards all the way the opposite side of the field, took a right turn and drove it another 50 yards to the UNCA corner where she passed to Wright. She found Kalli McCoy in front for MSU's third score of the day.
The Racers managed to handle UNCA's aggressive offense by limiting their shots on goal to five. Goalkeeper Tara Isbell stopped all of them to earn her fifth career shut out.
MSU Head Coach Beth Acreman said the Racers got control of the game when they made some defensive adjustments at the half.
“We changed some things at the break and made some adjustments that worked well,” Acreman said.
The Racers also have improved speed on their front line and it showed today.
“You can't teach speed,” Acreman said. “We had a couple of outstanding individual performances because we're playing so well as a group. When you do that, good things can happen.”
“Every game is allowing us to learn more about our team,” Acreman added. “We have such a young team and are gaining experience every time out.”
MSU out shot UNCA 21-15 and 9-5 in shots on goal.
UT Martin defeated Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in the other match of the day by a 4-1 score.
