Murray State volleyball defensive specialist Kayleah Sauer has earned her first Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor for the 2009 campaign. The award is the fourth overall for Sauer, after she claimed the final three of the 2008 season.
Sauer tallied a total of 50 digs in the Racers (5-15, 5-5 OVC) key victories over Austin Peay and Tennessee State last weekend. The wins allowed MSU to move into sole possession of fifth place in the conference standings and still keep them in the running to participate in the 2009 OVC Championship Tournament.
The Louisville, Ky., native finished the match against the Lady Govs one dig shy of the 30 mark in the four-set victory for the Racers. She also added 21 digs in the sweep of the Lady Tigers.
Sauer had a strong weekend at the service line as well; recording a career-high three service aces against TSU and adding two more against APSU.
The MSU volleyball team will be at the Big Apple Café tonight as part of their annual fundraiser Swinging To Eliminate Cancer. This season all funds raised will benefit the Gesler Family of Murray. Ashley Gesler, wife of MSU professor David Gesler, was diagnosed with cancer in April. The team will also be accepting donations through this weekend's matches against Tennessee Tech and league-leading Jacksonville State. For more information or to donate you can contact any team member or Teri LaJeunesse at (270) 809-3351 or by email at teri.lajeunesse@murraystate.edu.
