Racer Golf Welcomes Strong Field To MSU Invitational
10/2/2009 7:15:00 PM | Men's Golf
When the Murray State men's golf team plays host at the MSU Invitational Monday, they will be trying to keep one streak alive and stop another.
Since the event started in 2004, the Racers have won every team title, but have never had an individual champion.
"When you host a tournament on your home course, you expect to be in the running for the team title, and for the individual title too," MSU Head Coach Eddie Hunt said. "There's a good reason we haven't won an individual title, there have been some outstanding players come to our tournament and this year is no exception."
The Racers welcome four Ohio Valley Conference schools to the event including, UT Martin, Tennessee Tech, Morehead State, and SIU Edwardsville, with Southern Illinois, Central Arkansas, Belmont, Lipscomb, Bethel, Lewis and Union (Tenn.) rounding out the field.
SIU Edwardsville's Neal McCarty returns to defend his 2008 title.
Now a senior, McCarty fired a six-under 65 in the final round to shoot 201 to edge out Murray State's Cameron Carrico and Chris Griffin.
The Racers won their fifth straight MSU Invitational in 2008 with a 10-shot margin over runner-up Central Arkansas who returns next week.
"Our run in this tournament has been something," Added Hunt, who is in his ninth season as the Racers' head coach. "But we have a good field of teams every year and I know the competition will be good this year, so we have to go out and perform well."
The Racers just returned from an event in North Carolina, where they brought home a sixth place finish and got a good showing out of senior Chris Griffin, who earned OVC Golfer of the Week this week.
MSU will have two teams playing in the tournament.
The MSU Blue team includes Cameron Carrico, William Hunt, Nick Newcomb, Patrick Newcomb and Jared Wolfe. The Gold team consists of Tyler Brown, Hunter Ford, Dustin Gosser, Chris Griffin and James Stevenson.
The MSU Invitational is played at the home of Racer Golf, Miller Memorial GC and calls for 36-holes of stroke play Monday with the final 18 holes to come Tuesday. The shotgun start begins at 8 a.m. on Monday and 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The event is free and all fans are invited to come out and see some of the best collegiate golfers in the nation compete.
