The Murray State softball team picked up two victories Wednesday night against Mid-Continent at Racer Field at Murray-Calloway Country Park. The Racers defeated the Cougars 13-5 in the opener and 8-1 in the second game of the double header.
In the opening game Mid-Continent came out swinging and built an early 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. MSU responded in their first at-bat and tied the game at four. The Racers then stepped up the defense and held the Cougars scoreless for the next three innings while recorded seven runs of their own (three in the second and two in the third and fourth). Mid-Con scored one final run in the top of the fifth. Alaina Zloty then walked to start the bottom of the first and Megan Glosser got on base with a bunt before Jenna Bradley hit a double to send in Zloty and Glosser for the mercy run rule to end the game.
Kristen Broadway and Starr Gilley both saw time in the circle in the game for the Racers, with Broadway earning the win. Broadway pitched the first four innings and recorded two strikeouts. Gilley pitched the final inning and tallied to strikeouts of her own.
In the second game of the evening MSU wasted no time scoring and took a 2-0 lead after the first inning. In the third inning the Racers batted around and sent five more runs across the plate and then added an eighth run in the fifth inning. MSU's defense held the Cougars scoreless until the fifth inning when Mid-Con scored one run to keep the Racers from earning another mercy rule victory.
Gilley started in the circle for MSU in the second game and recorded three strike outs and allowing just one hit in two innings of work. Shelby Kosmecki took over for Gilley in the third and held the Cougars to just two hits in five innings. During the span Kosmecki recorded nine strikeouts, including three in the third.
The Racers have added one final double header to the fall portion of the schedule. MSU hosts Olney Community College, Saturday, Oct. 24 starting at 2 p.m. at Racer Field. The games will be the final test for the Racers before they officially start NCAA action, Feb. 20-21 at the University of North Carolina Tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C.
