Racer Golf Shooting For MSU Invitational Title
10/5/2009 9:00:00 PM | Men's Golf
The Murray State Blue Team carries a three-shot lead into the final 18 holes of the MSU Men's Invitational Tuesday at Miller Memorial GC in Murray, Ky.
It is a competition unlike any other year in the Racers' home event because two MSU teams are bunched at the top of the leader board.
It should prove an interesting final round Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
"We have tremendous competition any time we tee it up and I would think the final round will be intense," MSU head coach Eddie Hunt said. "Both of our teams have played well, but we can't forget about Central Arkansas, Tennessee Tech, and Union. They're all in the chase too."
The Racer Blue team fired rounds of 281-288=569 and had a three-shot lead over the Racer Gold squad who carded scores of 284-288=572.
Last year's runner up, Central Arkansas is in third place only four shots back after rounds of 289-284=573, while Tennessee Tech and Union (Tenn.) University shared fourth place at 581.
The MSU program has won all five championships in their home event since it started in 2004, but has never won the medalist championship.
MSU junior Nick Newcomb hopes to solve that problem Tuesday after he grabbed first place by one shot over Steve Lecuyer of Central Arkansas. Newcomb carded rounds of 67-71=138, while Lecuyer had scores of 69-70=139. MSU's Cameron Carrico was in third place after scores of 67-73=140, while Racer teammate from the MSU Gold team, James Stevenson was in fourth place after rounds of 69-72=141.
Other scores from the MSU Blue team included Patrick Newcomb in 13th place after rounds of 74-70=144, with Jared Wolfe in 31st with scores of 73-74=147. William Hunt was in 52nd place after scores of 77-75=152.
Other scores from the MSU Gold team included Tyler Brown in ninth place with rounds of 72-71=143, while Chris Griffin and Dustin Gosser were in 13th place. Griffin had scores of 71-73=144, while Gosser had scores of 72-72=144. Hunter Ford had 34th place after rounds of 74-74=148.
The Miller Memorial course is playing 6,601 yards this week to the usual par of 71.
Belmont was in sixth place at 583, while SIU Edwardsville (585), UT Martin Blue (591), Southern Illinois (592), and Lipscomb (593) rounded out the top-10.
Lewis had 11th place at 595, while Morehead State (597), UT Martin Orange (602), and Bethel (Tenn.) College (640) made up the rest of the field.
