The Murray State Women's soccer season came to an end tonight in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as they fell to the third-seeded Virginia Tech Hokies, 2-0, at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio.
MSU came out putting early pressure on the Hokie defense but wasn't able to get off any shots until the 24th minute. Virginia Tech took advantage of their second scoring chance of the half as Marika Gray one-timed a cross from Julian Johnson to put the Hokies ahead, 1-0, in the 14th minute of play.
The Hokies went up 2-0 in the 36th minute when the Racers were called for a tripping foul inside the box. Jennifer Harvey converted the penalty kick and sent the Hokies into halftime with the 2-0 lead.
Virginia Tech held a 7-2 edge in shots, including a 3-0 edge in shots on goal, during the first 45 minutes of play.
MSU and Virginia Tech battled back-and-fourth during the second stanza, but the Racers had trouble getting quality scoring opportunities during the half. Sophie Hargreaves tallied the first shot for the Racers in the half, which came in the 53rd minute, but the ball sailed over the crossbar. Danielle McMurray tallied her first shot of the game in the 69th minute but missed just wide of the goal.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half as the match finished 2-0 in favor of the Hokies.
Tara Isbell tallied six saves while allowing two goals to fall to 6-5-1 in net. Hargreaves led the Racers with two shots, while McMurray and Ashley Fraser each tallied one.
The Hokies held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks and 18-4 edge in shots.
MSU finishes the season 11-9-3 overall.
