11/4/2009 2:00:00 PM | Men's Golf
The Racers managed to pass the host Stetson University on the final day with a 293 while the Hatters carded a 300. MSU's 54-hole 878 included a 290 and 295 in the first two rounds. The Racers finished four shots off the 878 turned in by second place Florida Atlantic.
Florida Gulf Coast won the event at 851.
Nick Newcomb was the Racers' best finisher with a sixth place showing after scores of 71-69-74=214, while Chris Griffin took home 11th place after scores of 71-73-76=220. Jared Wolfe (229) rallied to a 26th place finish with a final round 72 after starting the event with scores of 77-80. Patrick Newcomb's scores of 76-73-83=232 brought home a 30th place finish in the field of 45 competitors.
MSU's Cameron Carrico, who had his second round score disqualified because of a rule violation in a bunker, finished the event with a 71 after a first round 72.
The Racers fall season was hilighted by some good play.
In seven events, the Racers had one win (Oct. 2) at their own MSU Invitational and a second place finish (Oct. 12) at the UTM Skyhawk Invitational.
MSU's first spring event will be to Ponte Vedra, Fla. and the Jacksonville University Invitational. An event made very special because the Racers will play the famed TPC at Sawgrass course including its signature 17th hole island Green. First round play is Feb. 8.
