A pair of Murray State football players were honored Sunday as defensive end Austen Lane was named the Ohio Valley Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week and quarterback Casey Brockman was named the Newcomer of the Week, the league announced.
Lane (Iola, Wisc.) was honored after recording a pair of sacks in the 27-17 victory over Austin Peay. The two sacks raised his career total to 29.0 and established a new record at MSU, breaking the old record of 28.0 held by Anthony Hutch. The All-American also did something that he had never done before by dropping back into coverage an intercepting a pass that was returned 21 yards for a touchdown. Lane's Saturday stat line also included a pass break-up and a quarterback hurry.
On the season, Lane leads the FCS with 11 sacks (1.22/game) and ranks second nationally with 17.0 tackles-for-loss (1.89/game). Both totals ranks second on the single-season list, behind only his numbers of 12.0 sacks and 22.0 tackles-for-loss in 2008.
Brockman (Murray, Ky.) earned newcomer honors after taking the field for the first time in his career Saturday. The walk-on true-freshman overcame early nerves to go 18-for-33 for 216 yards and a touchdown in leading the Racers to the comeback victory.
Trailing 10-0 with just over a minute to go in the first half, Brockman led the Racers on a 50-yard scoring that ended with Brockman throwing his first touchdown pass to Prince Nwagbara for 25 yards. In the third quarter, Brockman engineered an 11-play drive that led to the game-tying field goal.
The Racers return to the field Nov. 14 as they travel to take on Southeast Missouri. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Houck Stadium.
