Murray State defensive end Austen Lane received his second postseason honor Wednesday as he was named a First-Team All-America by the Associated Press. Last month, Lane was honored as the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He becomes the third player in MSU history to be a two-time All-American.
Lane (Iola, Wisc.) was honored by the AP for the second-straight year after being named to the third team in 2008. It also marks the second-straight season the Racers had a player selected to the first team, as Nathan Williams took home that distinction last season. Lane was also named to the 2008 College Sporting News Fabulous 50.
Lane was honored after recording 64 tackles, 32 solo, 19.5 tackles-for-loss, 11 sacks, three forced fumbles, an interception return for a touchdown and eight quarterback hurries. He recorded at least one tackle-for-loss in all 11 games and 15-straight dating back to last season. His 19.5 tackles-for-loss and 11 sacks rank second on the single-season list, behind only his record-setting season of 2008 where he recorded 22.0 tackles-for-loss and 12 sacks.
The 2009 season began with Lane recording seven tackles, including forcing a fumble that was returned 50 yards for a touchdown, in a victory over Kentucky Wesleyan. In the final non-conference game, Lane tallied a season-high three sacks against Missouri State. He totaled a season-best 3.5 tackles-for-loss in a victory over Tennessee State and had a pair of sacks in back-to-back games against Eastern Illinois and Austin Peay. In the victory over APSU, Lane dropped into coverage, recorded his first career interception, and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown.
Lane is also a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, honoring the top defensive player in the FCS. which will be awarded Thursday night in Chattanooga, Tenn..
