Baseball Announces Early Signees

Murray State head baseball coach Rob McDonald has announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Trey Bazzell (Kennett, Mo/Kennett), left-handed pitcher Kyle Cornett Louisville, Ky./Eastern), left-handed pitcher/outfielder Brock Downey (Murray, Ky./Murray), left-handed pitcher Thomas McGurk (Medina, Ohio/Medina), right-handed pitcher Tyler Saltsman Leitchfield/Grayson County) and left-handed pitcher/outfielder Luke Shuemaker (Paducah, Ky./Rend Lake) to National Letter's of Intent to attend the University and begin playing for the 'Breds in the Fall of 2010.
“I'm very pleased with this group of young men who will be coming into our program,” said McDonald. “They are outstanding young men and quality young pitchers. We feel they will all compete, develop, and thrive in our program. We did not set out to only sign left-handers, but we are thrilled with the way things have come together with this group.”
Bazzell is a three-time Bootheel All-Conference selection and three-time selection to the Dandy Dozen Baseball Team. He earned all-district and SEMO all-conference honors in 2009 after going 4-2 with a 4.12 ERA in nine appearances, seven starts. He struckout 46 over 34 innings.
Cornett will join former Eastern High School pitcher Ben Lady on 'Breds roster. Cornett was named to the all-district and all-region teams, as well as the all-district and all-region tournament teams. He was also selected to the 7th Region All-Star Game and the KHSBCA Junior East/West All-Star Game in helping the Eagles to a 34-6 record.
Cornett led the team with a .532 average, 58 hits, 16 doubles, 28 walks, a .653 on-base percentage and was hit by 12 pitches. On the mound, he went 4-2 with a 1.58 ERA and three saves in 14 appearances.
Downey will continue his college career in his hometown after completing a standout career at Murray High. He helped lead the Tigers to back-to-back appearances in the All “A” Classic and owns a .451 career average with 62 RBIs and 56 stolen bases. He also owns a 14-6 record with a 2.71 ERA on the mound. His efforts earned him a spot on the Region I Junior All-Star Team and the KHSBCA Junior East-West All-Star Game. His accomplishments are not limited to the diamond as he possesses a 3.6 GPA in the classroom.
McGurk will come to MSU after completing his prep career at Medina High School (Medina, Ohio). As a junior, McGurk went 3-3 with a 2.98 ERA. He allowed 33 hits and struckout 47 in 42 innings. This past summer, McGurk helped the Ohio Orioles capture the Cocoa Beach 18U Championship.
Shuemaker enters his sophomore season at Rend Lake College after hitting .242 with five doubles, two home runs and 13 RBIs. He also went 1-1 on the mound. He played his prep ball at Lone Oak High School where he was an all-district and all-region selection for the Purple Flash.
Saltsman is a two-sport star for the Cougars. As a junior, he was 7-3 with a 1.72 ERA and 64 strikeouts. He also hit .453 with nine doubles, three triples and five home runs. As a sophomore, Saltsman went 6-3 with a 1.90 ERA and 42 strikeouts. As an infielder, he hit .389 with five doubles and three home runs. Saltsman was also a starter on the Cougars basketball team that captured the Region 3 championship.
The 'Breds open the 2010 season Feb. 19 as they begin a three-game series at Lipscomb. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
