Murray State was one of three school's to land three players on the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Team as Wes Cunningham, Tyler Owen and Daniel Calhoun all garnered accolades. Defending champion Jacksonville State and Southeast Missouri also had three players honored.
“The preseason team is a nice recognition for these guys and shows some respect by the conference coaches,” said head coach Rob McDonald. “Obviously, the postseason teams mean a lot more to everybody.”
Cunningham (Louisville, Ky.) was an automatic selection at designated hitter after earning first-team honors in 2008. He finished the season hitting .380 with 30 RBIs, 32 runs scored and 30 walks. He also reached safely in 44 games, including a stretch of 37-straight games.
Owen (Evansville, Ind.) was named to the preseason team at third base after earning second-team laurels following the 2008 campaign. Owen hit .293 with seven doubles, 23 RBIs and 24 runs scored.
Calhoun (Evansville, Ind.) was voted to the preseason team by the league's head coaches as a starting pitcher. Calhoun is coming off a season in which he went 5-3 with a 3.00 ERA and six complete games.
The league's head coaches picked the ?Breds to finish sixth in the preseason poll. Defending regular-season champion Jacksonville State was tabbed as the preseason favorite with five first-place votes and 61 points. Defending tournament champion Eastern Illinois was a close second with four first-place votes and 60 points.
Austin Peay was picked third with 48 points, followed by Southeast Missouri (42), Tennessee Tech (38), Murray State (23), Morehead State (22), Eastern Kentucky (20) and UT Martin (10).
The ?Breds open the 2009 campaign Feb. 20 when they play host to South Dakota State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Reagan Field.
