The Murray State University athletics department released its 11-game football schedule for 2009 that includes five home games and a road contest at FBS North Carolina State.
“Since our arrival in Murray, we have had one of the most competitive schedules in the FCS and this year will be no different,” said head coach Matt Griffin. “We open with a good Kentucky Wesleyan team and then go on the road to North Carolina State and Missouri State, two teams that will be ranked in their respective divisions.”
For the third-straight year, the season opener will take place on a Thursday night as the Racers welcome Kentucky Wesleyan to Stewart Stadium on Sept. 3. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The contest marks the second meeting between the two schools with the Racers taking the only other meeting, 53-0, Nov. 20 at Stewart Stadium.
The Racers will take to the road the following weekend as they take on North Carolina State Sept. 12. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. central time at Carter-Finley Stadium in the first meeting between the two schools. It will also be the first game against a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
MSU closes out its non-conference slate with a road contest against Missouri State on Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. The two teams have met four times prior as they played every year between 1982-85. The Racers have won all four previous meetings, with the latest being a 36-21 victory in Springfield, Mo. on Oct. 26, 1985.
The Ohio Valley Conference schedule gets underway on Sept. 26 as MSU plays host to two-time defending champion Eastern Kentucky. It is family weekend for the Racers and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Racers lead the all-time series 38-26-4, but the Colonels have won last four meetings.
Following a bye week, the Racers welcome Jacksonville State to Stewart Stadium for Homecoming Oct. 10. Kick time is set for 3 p.m. JSU leads the series 5-1, including a tough 31-21 road victory last season.
The Racers play their first OVC road contest on Oct. 17 as they take on Tennessee State at LP Field. The Tigers lead the all-time series 11-9, but the Racers are coming off a thrilling 24-17 victory in which the Racers knocked down a pass at the goaline on the final play of the game.
MSU will be on the road for the second-straight week as it travels to UT Martin on Oct. 24. The Racers lead the series 31-13-1, but the Skyhawks have taken the last four contests in the rivalry.
The Racers close out the month of October with a Halloween contest against Eastern Illinois. The Panthers lead the all-time series 13-11 and have won the previous six meetings.
MSU closes out its home schedule on Nov. 7 against Austin Peay. The Racers lead the series with Governors 29-12 and are coming off a convincing 32-12 road victory a season ago.
The Racers close out the season with a pair of road games against Southeast Missouri and Tennessee Tech. This marks the first time since 1993 that the Racers will end the season with two-straight games away from home.
MSU travels to take on SEMO on Nov. 14 and close out the regular season at TTU on Nov. 21. Game times for both games are still to be determined. The Racers have won two-straight games against the Redhawks and handed the Golden Eagles a 51-21 defeat on Homecoming last year.
“In my seven years in the conference, it has gotten better from top to bottom every year,” said Griffin. “With the finish of two road games, I am sure they will be two meaningful games for our program. It certianly raises the bar and makes things more difficult, but certainly not a task that we will shy away from.”
The first round of the FCS Playoffs are set to get underway on Nov. 28.
The Racers are coming off a season in which they went 5-7 overall and 4-4 in OVC action.
