Leading off:
? The ?Breds are off to their best start since starting the 2005 season 3-1.
? The four-game series is the first of two-straight weekends MSU will play four-game series. The ?Breds host North Dakota State for four games next weekend.
? The series is part of a stretch in which the ?Breds play 12 of their first 13 games at the friendly confines of Johnny Reagan Field.
? Three players ( Daniel Calhoun, Wes Cunningham, Tyler Owen) were named to the OVC preseason team.
? The ?Breds were picked to finish sixth in the OVC preseason poll conducted by the league's head coaches.
Series history: The Redbirds lead the all-time series 4-1. The two teams squared off in a four-game series in Murray in 2003. The ?Breds took the first game, but dropped the next three. The teams met again in Normal, Ill., May 11, 2004 with the Redbirds coming away with a 4-3 victory.
Live stats: Live stats for this weekend's contests against Illinois State will be available on the MSU official athletic website, www.GoRacers.com.
Owen has big day: Senior third baseman Tyler Owen went 4-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored in the victory over Memphis Tuesday. It was the fifth four-hit game in Owen's career. He had a career-best five hits against Morehead State April 22, 2007.
Hill swings big stick: Junior college transfer Daniel Hill has shown some major pop in his bat early as the Germantown native has delivered two home runs over his first four games. Hill stepped to the plate in his first collegiate at-bat and promptly delivered a three-run home run to left center. Against Memphis, Hill delivered a no-doubt line-drive shot to left field that gave the ?Breds a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning.
First AB home run: Daniel Hill's three-run home run in his first colelgiate at-bat marked the second-straight season that a ?Breds player has done that. Last season, Zach Noonan homered to left center in his first career at-bat against Bradley.
Frey collects first career home run: Sophomore outfielder Elliot Frey collected his first career home run Tuesday as he lined a pitch over the wall in left center at Gagliano Field in Memphis, Tenn. The effort was part of a 2-for-4 day in which he drove in two and scored two runs. More importantly, Frey had one of the key plays in the game as he threw behind a runner at second to kill a Tigers rally in the third inning with the score tied 1-1.
Pitching out of jams: So far this season, the MSU pitching staff has been able to pitch themselves out of jams. Despite surrendering 43 hits over the first two games, the ?Breds pitching staff has not allowed more than three earned runs in any game.
Strong-armed Miller: Senior catcher Daniel Miller has shown off his strong arm this season as he has thrown out all three potential base stealers. He has also thrown out a runner trying to advance on a ball in the dirt.
