The 2008-09 season may be over, but that does not mean that the awards and recognition for the accomplishment of the Murray State women's basketball team will end. Senior Ashley Hayes was recently named one of the 52 regional finalists for the 2009 State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team for NCAA Division I student-athletes.
“I am very proud of the season and career that Ashley Hayes has had at Murray State,” said head coach Rob Cross. “This nomination just shows that her accomplishments have not gone unnoticed in the women's basketball community. I certainly believe that she is deserving of being named a State Farm All-America.”
The Humboldt, Tenn., native is one of six regional finalists from Region 4 after helping the Racers to a 23-9 record , their first Ohio Valley Conference regular-season title, and their third-straight post-season appearance. The 5-10 forward/guard averaged 22.6 points and 9.5 rebounds per game this season, while moving up to the No. 2 spot on the Racer's all-time scoring charts with 2,005 career points.
The two-time Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year (2007-08 & 2008-09) will have her name on several of the Murray State Top-10 career lists, ranking second in field goals made (809), third in rebounds (935), fifth in three-pointers made (124), and ninth in steals (151).
All 52 regional finalists will be narrowed down to a list of 40 finalists from any region, Thursday, March 25. From that list the 10-member State Farm Coaches' All-America Team will be selected.
